ROOTSTOCK
Rootstock is selected depending upon the mature size of the tree, variety, length of time until the tree bears fruit, soil type the tree will grow best in, and also resistance to disease.
Our rootstock may be available as either scions (cutting only) or more fully developed as a bare rooted stem with roots (ready for planting).
APPLE
Apple rootstock is suitable for grafting all fruiting apples including crab apples.
CHERRY
Cherry rootstock is suitable for grafting all sweet cherry (Prunus avium) and sour/pie cherry (Prunus cerasus) varieties and many ornamental cherry blossom varieties.
PEAR
Quince (Cydonia oblonga) rootstock is the most popular option for grafting pears. A dwarfing type, it is a different genus to pear (Pyrus).
The advantage in grafting pear onto a quince rootstock is that the tree will begin to fruit much earlier and will have higher fruit yields.
The added advantage is that it is easier to pick fruit and maintain your tree when it is smaller. As quince and pear are only distantly related, not all pear cultivars are compatible with quince rootstock. To guarantee success, an interstem of Beurre Hardy should be used. This is a small section of compatible scion wood grafted between the quince rootstock and the incompatible pear variety.
Seedling D6 Pear (Pyrus calleryana) rootstock may also be used resulting in large trees which are slow to bear fruit. The advantage of this rootstock is that there are no compatibility issues and no need for an interstem when grafting.
QUINCE
Quince rootstock can be used to graft all cultivars of quince, with no compatibility issues. The resulting trees will fruit earlier, yield better and be easier to manage than a quince grown on its own roots (propagated by cuttings or grafted onto seedling stock).
Quince rootstock may also be used for grafting pear varieties.
MULTI-PRUNUS
St Julian rootstock is a multi-prunus rootstock suitable for grafting certain varieties of peaches, nectarines, apricots, plums, gages, damsons, and almonds.
Myrobalan rootstock is suitable for all plums and some apricots.
